Ohana Media Group and KTUU Channel 2, along with Midnight Sun Oncology, understand cancer affects many Alaskans, and with early cancer screenings, survival is a great possibilty. Through the Early Detection Video Contest and this website, we hope to shed light on early cancer detection and educate and inform the Alaskan community. When detected early, breast, prostate, colon and cervical cancer are very much treatable. Unfortunately, on average, 1,500 people die from cancer-related causes every day.
Survival rates for these cancers increase dramatically, if detected early. Consider the following statistics and talk to you doctor soon about screening tests you may want to schedule:
- Currently, 61% of breast cancers are diagnosed at a localized stage, for which the five-year survival rate is 98%
- The relative five-year survival is 90% for colorectal cancer patients diagnosed at an early, localized stage; however, only 40% of cases are diagnosed at this stage
- Cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates have decreased 67% over the past three decades, with most of the reduction attributed to early detection
- About 20% of ovarian cancers are found at an early stage. When ovarian cancer is found early at a localized stage, about 94% of patients live longer than 5 years after diagnosis
Not only are early detection screenings important - it saves lives. Do you have a compelling story on the importance of early detection screenings?
